Swansea World Stars

Swansea World Stars victorious!

Winners of the 2007 All-Wales

Refugee World Cup!

Swansea Senior Association Football League affiliation no. 0897Y

The soccer team was founded in spring 2002.  After a season in Swansea Bay Race Equality Council's Zebra League (2003-4), S.W.S. is now in Swansea Senior League division 4.

The idea came from Banire Sy Savane, who has worked tirelessly with Sarkat Junad, Rob Mackenzie, Sean Barr and others to develop the team.  Scroll down this page for pictures.

Our home ground is Ashleigh Road (off the road to Mumbles, first turning right after the road up to Singleton Hospital).  (Map.)

For info about training sessions etc, or to volunteer to help in any way, please contact Banire on 07956429527 or Junad on 07739139537.  Supporters welcome at all matches!

New: January 2005 The team has been awarded a grant by the Communities First Trust Fund (ref. CFTF 1-0666) to pay for kit and equipment and other expenses up to £3,600 over the next 12 months. The grant will be managed by Swansea Bay Asylum Seekers Support Group.

This is one of a series of football paintings by immi, a refugee who has been in the UK for 11 months and keeps his identity secret. His paintings were on show at the IZO gallery in London in December 2004. "Think about it", says immi. "For ninety minutes or more your eyes are fixed on one thing, you are chasing one thing, fighting for one thing: the ball. My paintings distil that experience."

July 2nd 2002 - v The Swansea World All Stars
The first friendly game saw us take on a group of talented refugees and top blokes from the Eastern Bloc and from Africa, Turkey and other places collectively known as the Swansea World Stars.

In a close, enjoyable game in conditions which threatened to ruin Reeco's mighty quiff, we eventually run out winners ...

Nick Cusack turned up to see what was happening but foolishly left before the game started and missed out the chance to sign AAJ as cover for Roger Freestone next season
