Summer Courses 2003

Courses in: 1. English - 2. Arts and Crafts - 3. Volunteering - 4. Interpreting - 5. Counselling

 

All courses take place at the DEPARTMENT OF ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION on the University campus

 

Trainers are provided by DACE.  Participants will receive a certificate from DACE / University of Wales Swansea.

 

There are five courses.  All the courses last for five days.  Every day, the course begins at 10 am, and ends at 4 pm [16h] (with one hour for lunch).

 

There are courses every day in August (except Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays).

 

A creche for children is provided during all courses, with a qualified creche worker who will keep the children happy and occupied.  Lunch is provided.  Transport (bus tickets) will be paid for, especially for women and children, or if you live a long way from St Helen's Road.

Course 1:  "English for French speakers" on Mondays, beginning July 7 [July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 11]

 

Course 2:  "Arts and crafts [specially for women and children]" mostly Mondays, beginning August 4 [August 4, 12, 18, 25 and September 1] - Different activities every day.

 

Courses 3, 4 and 5 are for women and men who are helping asylum seekers and refugees adjust to life in Swansea, or people would like to find out more about this kind of work. You will learn necessary information and skills so that you can assist people, for example by working as a volunteer with the Red Cross, Welsh Refugee Council, Health Services, Swansea Council Asylum Team, Leena Homes, Clearsprings, SBASSG and others. These skills are also useful to employers. By following these courses you will also improve your English.

 

Course 3:  "Volunteering with asylum seekers: local guidance and orientation" begins Tuesday 29 July [Tues 29, Weds 30 July, Fri 1, Tues 5, Weds 6 August] - General practical advice and problem-solving, local information, services for asylum seekers and refugees, other services they are entitled to, opportunities for education, training and volunteer work experience. Everything a newcomer to Swansea needs to know.

 

Course 4:  "Interpreting - basic skills" begins Friday 8 August [Fri 8, Weds 13, Fri 15, Tues 19, Weds 20 August] - For people who are asked to interpret and translate by other asylum seekers and refugees or by organisations. Also for people who think they might like to try this kind of work. The course is for people with any languages. You will develop your language skills and you will also find out about possible careers using your language skills.

 

Course 5:  "Counselling - basic skills" begins Friday 22 August [Fri 22, Tues 26, Weds 27, Fri 29 August, Mon 2 September] - Working as a volunteer with asylum seekers and refugees often involves very emotional situations. Here you can learn some skills to help people cope with traumatic events. You will also find out about possible careers in counselling and therapy.
